Why Blogger?

Just in case you wondered why the hell I decided to try out this blogging lark, and who on earth do I think I am!!

OK..... so firstly, yes I know that there are hundreds, probably thousands of parent bloggers out there.

Secondly, I am not trying to get a book deal, or get famous, and I am definitely not trying to pretend I am some kind of parenting 'expert'.

I am NO WAY in the same league as the super bloggers, nor will I pretend to be. However they are, and always will be, the inspiration behind what I do.

Because, in the same way that my husband will never be the next David Beckham, but that doesn't stop him playing football, and my friend who loves to run won't win the Marathon, but it doesn't stop her taking part, I am not looking to 'be' anything, other than someone with an interest in blogging.

Its something I have admired from afar for a while and wanted to give it a go.

I was actually initially put off by the super bloggers, with their hundreds of thousands of followers and book deals. My opinion was, they've got this covered, what could I possibly bring to the party?

However, that isn't what blogging is about. I admit it has taken me a little while to realise this, because initially I put a lot of pressure on myself, and went in all guns blazing. But I don't regret it one bit.

Blogging isn't about who has the funniest stories, who takes the most risks, or who shares the most intimate details of their life. It's not about who has the best punch lines, the most creative meme's, or takes the best photo's. It also isn't a popularity contest.

For me, blogging is about writing about the real experiences from my life, and who better to do it, than me! If this means I post 3 things in one day or 3 things in one month, that's just the way it is. It's not something you can force. I have had the best reactions from the things I have written in the spare of the moment. The things I haven't read and re-read time and time again, and edited, and re-edited. They are the things I have taken 10 minutes on and just hit 'post'.

Why? Who knows, but I like to think its because people can tell when you write from the heart.

Why a mummy blog? There are sooooo many?

Well, come on people what else would I write about? I'm not a fitness guru, a fashionista, a baker/chef, a photographer or artist and I don't have the patience for crafts, so really the mum thing is all I have!

They say 'misery loves company' and they are not wrong. What drew me to people like Constance Hall and Sarah Turner (the unmumsy mum), and many, many more since are their honest accounts of what it means to be a mum, a wife and indeed a woman, in the real world.

The media forces so much crap at us sometimes it's easy to get lost under images of perfect people, with perfect eyebrows, and perfect children, in perfect clothes, having the PERFECT day!!

I find it so refreshing to see someone just.... telling the truth.

It's not just the writing either, it's the interaction from others. It's so rewarding to write something and have someone say 'thank god it's not just me' or 'I totally get what you mean' (or 'Loathe her with a passion' on a recent blog about Gina Ford!) basically anything that means that they have taken something positive from it.

Writing for me is therapeutic. I can slam something into my keyboard and it gives me a lot of release, and perspective. Sometimes I can write a whole post and then delete it thinking, actually, this isn't as much of a big deal as I thought. It's like therapy!

Many people don't understand it, they think its weird, stupid, pointless, and some think it is attention seeking. I totally get where they are coming from, after all I will never understand the appeal of football, or Rugby, or Motorbike Racing.... or Trainspotting!!!

We are all different, with varied hobbies and interests, and this just happens to be one of mine.

What My Fridge Says

  1. Totally agree it is therapy! Writing for me is just a such a great way for me to stay sane, although if I am sane I am not sure that sane actually means sane. Does that even make sense??! Oh well. But really it helps me and I totally agree when we get a comment back saying we have helped someone in some way it i does feel great. Each voice has their own things to say, and just because we don't have a massive following doesn't mean we can't make a difference. In fact I find some of the massive blogs loose their own original voice because they are always doing reviews. When I started blogging I just did it because I needed to write. A friend told me about blogging and I had no idea it even existed, I googled how to start a blog and did it without ever reading any blog ever, crazy, yes, but it made me happy. Great post! #thesatsesh

  2. REALLY well said! You have hit the nail on the head as to why so many of us blog - it is a hobby and an interest; a way to be authentic and honest and yet there is a bit of 'sneeriness' from others sometimes. I really like your analogy with David Beckham - I'm going to keep that in mind when I have my regular crises of confidence about why I both er blogging! #thesatsesh

  3. This is so me. It's not about number of followers, and I completely fail at social media. But writing is this thing I have that's just mine. And I don't want to kill myself trying to gain more followers, well that just defeats my purpose for starting a blog- its just supposed to be something I enjoy doing, and I'm okay with that. Great post, thanks for sharing it on #thesatsesh
